Reunions - I thought we were done with high school
I just returned from my 20 year high school reunion. Before the reunion, some people made comments on the Evite, or in an email to the whole class, or in an email just to me about weight. In one instance, a man made the comment, but all other times it was a woman. One person at the reunion told me that she was surprised that more women weren't fatter given that it is difficult to stay thin. I thought, "we aren't supposed to stay thin, forever looking like we are 16" although I know this is often the hope of many. What I said out loud is, "I think most women who are fat or even think they are fat would decide not to attend." She agreed.
Isn't it sad! So many women (and some men) would chose to not attend a reunion, or a dip in the pool, or a vacation due to shame about her weight. In a way, I don't blame her! I heard people comment on the weight of other women... "she looks good" if she is thin or "too bad she got fat." Didn't we all do this in high school?
What if we all felt great about ourselves, despite our weight? What if we all praised others, no matter what their size? We all have many accomplishments, challenges, positive attributes, negative traits. I encourage you to find the good in the next person you judge as fat... even (especially) if that person is you! Try that on and see how it fits.
